Fun and Creative Birthday Invitation Wording

So you’re having a birthday party for someone special. Maybe it’s a surprise party, maybe not, but in any case you are looking for the right words to invite people and tell them what to expect. You want the birthday invitation wording to perfectly set the tone for the birthday.

The easiest thing to do is to buy ready-made invitations and add wording of your own. If they are surprise birthday invitations, you want to be sure to indicate that it’s a surprise, so no one tips the guest off. Go off the deep end with hyperbolic wording and say things such as, “Extra-Special-Super-Secret-Absolutely-Fabulous Birthday Party.” Exaggeration goes a long way in conveying fun.

Writing Your Own Invitations

If you want to create custom invitations from scratch, start by thinking about the birthday person. If he or she prefers a quieter party, tone down the invitation. Keep it simple: “You are invited to celebrate Kathy’s birthday with her.” Give the basic facts of the occasion—where, when, for whom—and let the guests imagine the rest.

If, on the other hand, it is going to be a really big bash with lots of music, dancing, party food, and so on, or if it is an elaborately planned surprise, your invitation needs to convey that clearly. Indicate the dress code, if there is one.

If you word it formally, people will expect a more formal party. If it’s more of a free-for-all, then go wild with alliterative phrases, silly rhymes, or puns. State what some of the activities are: “You are invited to celebrate Kathy’s birthday with her, her fifty closest friends, a live band, and an everlasting bowl of party punch.”

Invitations also say a lot through word font, color, symbols, and size, so keep that in mind too.  Wording matters, but you can set the mood with other things if you feel at a loss for words. People will remember the party long after they forget the invitation itself. If your invitation writing is fun, not work, you will have many happy returns.
