Birthday Party Hats – Make or Buy?

The crafty parent knows there are options when it comes to birthday party hats. Depending on the theme of your party, and the age of the attendees, you have the option to buy, make, or have the kids make their own party hats. If your theme is a popular licensed character, you may want to buy all of the party supplies at one time.

If you just can’t find something like Flintstone party supplies, you can improvise - buy stickers of the character, and attach them to party invitations, cups, and homemade hats. If your theme is more creative, and less constrained than a single cartoon or superhero, then making hats and decorations can be a breeze.

Kids can make their own party hats, headbands or tiaras, if you offer inexpensive craft supplies and have some sort of pattern already cut out. You can easily make party hats by flattening a store bought hat and tracing the pattern onto heavy construction paper. Cut the hat out, staple it back together, and attach elastic string – now it’s ready to decorate. Any theme, from Dora the Explorer, to SpongeBob, to the Flintstones, can be decorated on a hat. If you can’t draw Fred Flintstone, why not just add a few dinosaur bones? Kids will love the opportunity to make and then wear home these special party favors.
