Make a Splash with Child Party Games

Kids and water are natural companions. Add water to kids and you have an instant party. Plan child party games that involve water and your party will be a success.

If you have a backyard pool or can rent a neighborhood pool, you have everything you need for a great kids party. To make the pool party safe for children and relaxing for parents hire two or three lifeguards, even if you’re hosting the party in your backyard.

For party games in the pool, all your need are a whistle and few supplies. Start by having relay races. Remember that not all party guests may be good swimmers so have some relays that use kickboards or inner tubes. Play games with diving sticks and other items that will sink to the bottom of the pool and can be retrieved. Throw dimes and quarters into the pool and let kids keep what they can scoop up from the bottom.

Action Outside of the Pool

Play group party games that children can participate in from poolside. Float rubber ducks in the pool. Number the bottom of each duck. Divide kids into teams and have them try to capture the ducks with a long-handled net. Award points for the number on each duck. Since kids are wet anyway, play other party games with water balloons and squirt guns.

If you don’t have a backyard pool, check into renting a pool for a private party or having a party during regular pool hours. Many pools have picnic areas that can be reserved to serve refreshments and open presents. Since the party will be held outside on a hot day, consider skipping the cake and serving cool ice cream treats.

For party favors, give kids mini bottles of sunscreen (and make sure they put some on), sunglasses, visors or flip-flops. Companies that make personalized party favors can make custom pool favors that say “Justin’s Birthday Bash.”
