ideas for more than the same old college parties

Dressing Up a College Party

Tired of the same old college party with cheap beer, corner store dip with stale chips, or pizza? There are ways to class up a party without spending a lot of cash. Party foods on campus don’t have to be the same old stuff. With a little determination, you can plan a memorable party that will get friends munching and talking, especially if balloon helium is involved.

Start with a theme. There are always Mardi Gras or Christmas party ideas, but at the same time, it doesn’t matter what time of year you have the party. If there isn’t a holiday, birthday party, or reason to get together, make one. Once you’ve picked a theme, the rest is easy.

Western party ideas encompass the obvious cowboy/cowgirl theme and red meat offerings. Plan your college party around an ethnic theme: have a potluck and ask everyone to bring an Indian dish, for example. On your party invitations, include several web sites with sample recipes. To accompany the food, visit local wine or beverage outlets and find drinks from the country you are celebrating.

Smart, Yet Cheap

Other convenient party themes any time of year are sporting events, which give an excuse to gather a group together and eat. When games are on television, you can base the food theme on team colors as a way to deviate from the typical chips and dip, and only serve food in one or two colors.

Cooking contests are another way to encourage guests to experiment and each bring a unique and tasty dish. For those college students not inclined or equipped to cook, take-out food works just fine. Dress the meal up with a colorful paper tablecloth, some drug store candles, and a bottle of wine, and your guests will be pleased.
