How to Throw a First Birthday PartyHolding a first birthday party for your one-year-old can be a challenging affair, especially if you haven’t done this before. Invitations, decorations, food, preparing the space—all take thought. If this is your first child, you’re still busy learning how to be a parent to an ever-changing infant, and a party may seem overwhelming. One way to organize your party is to hold a theme party. Once you have a theme, you can set up the party accordingly and let the guests know what to expect on the invitations. For example, you could use Curious George invitations and arrange the birthday party with George-related decorations and party favors. Invite the adult guests to wear yellow hats! A party store will often have everything you need for a theme party. It’s Party Time!Remember that the party guests are small people who may not even be walking yet. When you issue the invitations, discuss any special needs a child may have with his or her mom or dad. Food allergies can be a particular concern. Your house may be child-proofed for a single one-year-old but not for five. Move furniture to make extra space. Keep your decorations out of reach of curious hands, and put touchable, interesting materials at a crawler’s level. At the party, have a mixture of interesting activities, and arrange quiet space for the inevitable melt-down. (Try not to hold the party before everyone’s nap-time!) Finger food is good, but nothing chokeable. And have your camera ready; nothing says “first birthday” like the traditional birthday party pictures of the guest of honor’s frosting-covered face. Celebrating a child’s first birthday is more memorable for the parents than the infant. Your child won’t remember the party and may be more interested in eating the invitations than reading them. That’s okay. Relax and have a good time. You can play too. Enjoy wearing the yellow hat.
