Halloween Decoration Ideas Start with Pumpkins

Pumpkins have been an important part of Halloween celebrations since Irish immigrants began carving them into jack-o-lanterns. Today many Halloween decoration ideas start and end with pumpkins.

Children’s Halloween party decorations more often than not include pumpkins. A painted or carved pumpkin will decorate the party table. Paper pumpkins will hang on the walls and the party food will be served on pumpkin plates. Halloween party games for kids also make use of pumpkins.

Popular games are often modified to fit the Halloween party theme. Bingo becomes pumpkin Bingo. Pin the Tail on Donkey is changed to Pin the nose on the jack-o-lantern. Instead of hiding Easter eggs, moms hide pumpkins for young children to find during the Halloween party.

Halloween party food is either shaped like or taste like pumpkin or both. Pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie are fall party staples. Children decorate cupcakes and sugar cookies to look like jack-o-lanterns. Would it even be possible to have a children’s Halloween party without the pumpkin?

More Pumpkin Decorating and Game Ideas

If we can’t beat the pumpkin we might as well help come up with creative ideas for incorporating the orange squash into children’s Halloween celebrations. Here a few ideas that might stretch our thinking about pumpkins at Halloween parties.

  • Have children play musical pumpkins instead of musical chairs. Buy pumpkins big enough for children to sit on. When the music stops, the child not sitting on a pumpkin is out.
  • Let children paint and decorate pumpkins during the party. Have all kinds of craft supplies on hands. Challenge their creativity by asking them to make something other than a face. Have older children carve modern art pumpkins with geometric designs. While the kids are carving, you can roast the pumpkin seeds for bonus party treats.
  • Build a pumpkin snowman. Stack three pumpkins together (you might need some dowels or hot glue) and let kids decorate it.
