Get Creative with Holiday Party Games

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose…Imagine how fun those lyrics might be in a game of Christmas Pictionary or charades. The Christmas season is filled with songs, stories and traditions that lend themselves to fun holiday party games.

Choose Christmas party games that fit your guests and your party venue. Adults might not enjoy playing pin the nose on Rudolph unless they’ve had a few drinks. A basketball game of H-O-R-S-E or S-A-N-T-A probably isn’t a good choice if you’re holding the Christmas party in your living room (but it might make a great holiday party idea for a rented gym).

Look for free party games on the Internet. You can find Christmas trivia games, Christmas bingo and picture puzzles based on Christmas carols. Download these games and make copies for your party guests. Make the games more intriguing by awarding great prizes like gift certificates for movies or restaurants.

Group Party Games

Plan the evening around group party games like bunko or bridge. Be sure to invite the appropriate number of people. Give the games creative holiday touches. Use holiday playing cards and award Christmas-themed prizes.

For groups that enjoy active parties, plan a picture scavenger hunt. Divide into teams and arm each team with a video camera. Each group must video tape themselves completing tasks like making a snowman, singing Jingle Bells in McDonald’s, kissing an inflatable Grinch or Homer Simpson lawn decoration, and committing a random act of holiday cheer. When the teams return, serve hot chocolate and party food and watch the holiday videos.

Christmas party activities often include a gift exchange. Make this fun by playing a game to determine who receives each gift. Draw numbers, role dice or play poker to distribute the presents. Ask people to answer a Christmas trivia question before choosing a gift. Allow people to steal gifts that someone else has already selected.
