Planning Successful Kids Birthday Party Games

It’s a birthday! Everyone expects a fun time with presents, playful decorations, and of course kids birthday party games. But making sure you have the right games for the party can sometimes be a little tricky. If there are too many or two few kids at the birthday, or the wrong kinds of games for the kids, then the games won’t work.

If your party is planned around a theme, such as a Cinderella birthday party, it may be easy to find related games, or encourage imaginative play. Encourage the kids to act out the story of Cinderella. Dress yourself as a fairy godmother. Decorate the house as a castle. (If you’re really clever, you can convince the children to continue playing a Cinderella game and help clean up.)

Setting Up Structured Games

If you’re playing games which are highly structured or very familiar, one thing that works well is to set up stations if it’s a large party and rotate the children in and out. The kids can take turns playing the games they like, and the birthday won’t be spoiled by unhappiness at being left out. If it’s a small party and everyone can play the same game at the same time, the issue is more one of making them fun party games. No one wants guests to go home in tears.

Make sure the games are age appropriate, and remember that they are for the children’s pleasure, not yours. If not everyone wants to play a particular game, that doesn’t mean you failed. Kids have different interests and attention spans, and they will individually enjoy different things about the party. Cheerful play instead of competitive play can make the difference for some. Fairy godmothers at birthday parties should be giving gifts of fun, or they might turn into a pumpkin themselves!
