Party Game Ideas Can Bring the Office to Life

Next time you’re in charge of planning an office party, don’t let co-workers just grab a piece of cake and head back to their desks. Try these party game ideas to get people mingling, talking and having fun.

The office party games you choose should fit the venue, the occasion and the time available. If you’re having a short baby shower or birthday party during the workday, use games that actually begin before the party. A day or two prior to the office party, fill a creative container that fits the party theme (a baby bottle, champagne flute, fish bowl, etc.) with pennies, M & M’s or peanuts. Have office workers estimate how many objects are in the container. At the party, award the filled container to the person who made the closest estimate.

For office birthday parties, have workers choose a movie or cartoon character that reminds them on the honoree. Print pictures of those characters and hang them on the office wall. At the party, play a game trying to match each character with the person who chose it.

Build Teamwork with Your Party

If you’ll have more time, plan party games that involve teamwork. You can use standard boxed games such as Outburst or Pictionary or create your own team competition games. Make versions of Trivial Pursuit, Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune that relate to the guest of honor or the office in general. (I’ll have Dumb IT Questions for $200, please.) Award prizes and party favors to both the game winners and losers.

To create camaraderie in the office, plan the entire party around games that pit divisions against each other. Stage your own mini Office Olympics with events such as cubical crash, chair races and collating contests. Get into the theme by using the Olympic rings and medals as party decorations. Award points to winning teams and see if the boss will give the gold medal division a half-day of vacation. Now that will be an office party no one will miss.
