Enlist Help in Planning Party Games for Teens

What do teenagers really want to do at parties? Smart parents won’t try to guess. They’ll enlist their kid’s help in planning party games for teens.

The experts (those between 13 and 19 years old) in our house say that teen parties should include lots of active games. If possible, hold the party in a place that has several activities on hand like pool, ping-pong and foosball. These will provide hours of teen party entertainment. You can build group games around these activities.

If you have a video game system, play a dance game. Our teens love Play Station’s Dance, Dance Revolution (DDR in teen speak). Teens will enjoy playing DDR themselves and watching others try to follow the dance steps on the screen. Buy, rent or borrow two DDR mats so two teens can dance at once.

Twist and Shout

Poker and Twister make the teen-approved list of fun party games. Have plenty of decks of cards, stacks of Pringles potato chips and M & M’s on hand. Assign each color of M & M and different value for poker betting. (Party hint: you can buy bulk M & Ms in just about any color at many party stores.) Break out four Twister mats and lay them in a square for a wild large group game.

Another popular teen party activity is wrestling in inflated sumo suits. These suits can be rented from entertainment companies. The rental company will show you how to inflate the suits or will even send an operator to your party site with the suits and a wrestling ring or mat.

Complement the games and activities with lots of good party foods and fun prizes. Give door prizes throughout the evening or let teens complete for prizes like music CDs, gift certificates to fast food places or DVD movies. Mardi Gras beads (regardless of the type of party you’re having) are popular teen party favors.

Follow these tips from teens themselves and you won’t get that "your so lame" look—at least not for your party planning skills.
