Break Out the Party Hats!

Can it really be a party without hats? There’s something about putting a hat on our head that brings out our inner jester, diva, princess or pirate. So don’t forget the party hats, whether you’re planning an 75th birthday party, a western hoe down or a pirate party.

The Red Hat Society has made an art out of wearing hats for just for fun. We should follow that lead and embrace hats as a symbol of celebration—and we’re not just talking about the cone hats that kids wear at birthday parties. Hats can be incorporated into numerous party themes or be the theme themselves.

Some Possibilities for Using Hats at Your Next Party

For a pirate theme party, use hats as part of the entertainment. Guests can make simple pirate hats from felt or paper and decorate them with their personal pirate theme. Party supply stores also sell inexpensive pirate hats that can be given as party favors. Don’t forget that bandanas are a type of pirate hat. Help your buccaneers make eye patches to go with their hats. Play games like pin the hat on the pirate.

For a football party, March Madness Party or sports-themed birthday celebration, ask guests to wear their wildest sports hats. For some guests, that might mean a well-worn baseball cap. For others it might be a football helmet or even a foam cheese head. Use sports hats and helmets as serving bowls for party food.

For a woman’s birthday party or garden party, ask guests to get their elegant hats out of the closet. Encourage women to wear not only their hats, but their gloves, pearls and boas. Have a hat fashion show and let each woman share the story of her hat. Give gaudy pieces of cheap costume jewelry (huge rings and brooches) that your guests can wear at the party and take home as favors.
