Try a Pinata for Birthday Fun

A perennial favorite a birthday celebrations is the pinata. Best played outside, and always under adult supervision, a piñata will be the highlight of a child’s birthday celebration. The piñata combines a great party game, along with fun treats, party favors and candy. Everyone wins when you have a piñata at your child’s party. Simple pinatas can be made with papier-mâché and tissue paper over a balloon or other form, but the fanciest pinatas need to be ordered or bought at a party store. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and unique pinatas can sometimes be made to order.

After you pick out your piñata, you will need to fill it with little surprises. Choose unique party favors and a variety of candy to fill your piñata. Other party supplies that you will need to ensure success, include a specially designed piñata buster stick (or a broom handle) and some blindfolds. You may need rope to hang your piñata, and somewhere to suspend it at a proper height for the party guests.

Fill the piñata before the party, so the guests don’t know what kinds of surprises and favors are inside. You may want to have additional candy and goodies to make sure everyone gets plenty once the piñata is broken.

Safety First

In addition to close adult supervision when using pinatas, other safety rules include keeping the other children in a circle of about 15 feet away from the piñata. Allow the shortest child to start, moving up to the taller kids last.

Once the child is blindfolded, an adult can spin them slowly a few times, then hand them the stick and guide them toward the piñata. When the piñata finally breaks, keep the party guests back until the blindfolded child has quit hitting. Grab the stick quickly, then let the kids loose to gather up all of the candy and party favors dropped from your piñata.
