Make Waves with Pool Party GamesOne of the best childrens party ideas can be summed up in two words: POOL PARTY! Most kids find the water irresistible. Invite kids to grab their swimsuits and meet for an afternoon of pool party games. Don’t dismiss the pool party idea just because your child’s birthday is in January. Winter is a great time to rent an indoor pool for a kids party. Many times, the pool will have kickboards and diving sticks you can use for pool games. No matter when the party is, keep safety in mind. Make sure you have plenty of adult supervision. Hire at least two lifeguards, even for a backyard pool party. If the party is at an outdoor pool, make sure kids wear sunscreen. Get Set to Get WetWhen it’s time for everyone to get in the water, start the party with a game of sharks and minnows. Have the birthday boy or girl start as the shark. All the other kids are minnows. At the signal, the minnows jump into the water and must swim to the other side of the pool. Any minnow that gets tagged by a shark becomes a shark. Continue the game until only one child is left. They are the champion minnow and win the game. Play relay games that use fun, simple strokes that most kids can do. Have a dog paddle relay. Give each child a noodle as a party favor. Have a relay race where kids must swim with a noodle between their legs. Have kids dive for treasure using diving sticks or other heavy objects. Mark the sticks and have each correspond to a prize. Don’t limit the fun to the pool. Plan some games to play “on shore.” Since the kids are already wet, get out the hose for a game of wet-n-wild limbo. Squirt a stream of water from the hose at lower and lower heights as kids try to limbo their way under it without getting wet. Bubbles and water balloons are other fun activities for landlubbers.
